It was a beautiful day of diving today as the seas were much calmer. We enjoyed dives with very little current and they were very relaxing. One more day of diving and then we are going to visit Key West on Saturday and Tarpon fishing Saturday evening! We saw another turtle today but he was too far for a decent picture. We also saw a number of nurse sharks swimming around. I got a picture of him in the distance but he was scooting along fairly quickly. Here are the highlights.
At the very beginning of one dive today I dropped in on this variety of Christmas tree worms on top of a coral. It reminded me of shopping for Christmas trees – except I was in 80 degree Fahrenheit salt water.
This giant green Morray eel was hiding under a coral head. Claudio found his tail and managed to get him to poke his head out the other end.
Here is Michelle about to enter the water with the assistance of Captain Ken aboard the ‘Giant Stride’. The Giant Stride is a very comfortable boat and we have been lucky enough to have the boat to ourselves most of the afternoons.
A lionfish that is a very beautiful fish but is treated as an invasive species in this area. Our dive masters will often bring spear guns for the dives and eliminate any that are found.
Nurse shark in the distance. Not a great photo but he was moving pretty fast.
Here are a pair of Jawfish. They are tiny fish that live in a hole in the sandy bottom. Their name comes from the fact that the males species carries their eggs in their mouth until they hatch.
I was able to get up close and personal to this spotted eel.
Here is another spotted eel that I found amongst a colorful setting.
Here we found a cool setting with a yellow line arrow crab and a two cleaner shrimp and an eel!! I was able to catch the yellow line arrow crab and one of the cleaner shrimp. You can see part of the second cleaner shrimp on the left side of the picture.
After our four dives today Pat and I decided to go for dinner at a local Cuban restaurant while the other four went for a night dive. We had Churrasco skirt steak with chimichurri sauce and for desert we chared a slice of Mango and Key Lime Pie. A great way to end a great day on Islamorada Florida.
